FLEA TIPS
Bathes:
For dogs that have become heavily infested with fleas shampoo with dawn
liquid dishwashing detergent. Leave heavy suds on for 10 minutes then rinse and
shampoo with your regular dog shampoo or something calming and soothing such as
Oat Mella Dog Shampoo. We purchase this shampoo at
RevivalAnimal.com
We find this a safe and effective method.
Yard Control:
One method is to use Hartz Flea & Tick Shampoo in the YARD SPRAYER with
a little dawn dishwashing liquid and a dab of bleach for each application. This
can help up to a month and in infested situations need to do every week. Too
much bleach can kill your grass. We don't recommend this shampoo for Chows skin.
Another method is a powder product 5% Sevin Dust or the liquid for the sprayer or both. Dust can be used on the dogs and their bedding. This product can be purchased at K-Marts and Wal-Mart stores.
Natural Remedies:
This works great for around the house foundation to keep fleas from
traveling indoors - also using outdoors to help control the yard becoming
infested.
The secret is WALNUT LEAVES and/or SHELLS. We have pallets covered with
plywood for their beds out doors and that our dogs are commonly allergic to
cedar, we can put the walnut shells and leaves under their pallets to
repel fleas. Walnut shells even make attractive flower bed cover instead of bark
dust. Puppies and some dogs may want to chew on the shells so they may need
placed in areas where the dogs cannot get to them. I have not heard of any
health issues from that but I suppose they could choke.
We recommend using the Dawn Dishwashing Liquid in the Spring. After 3 days use Frontline Plus first and follow every month in using Frontline Original (Top Spot). We also recommend the natural remedy using the Walnut shells and/or leaves.
