BREEDING CYCLES

Before bleeding shows up:
The first 5 days her appetite may change
Possible swelling of vulva
Become restless
Males and females will start sniffing her

Next 10 days
Bleeding for the next 10 days or longer
(red, pink to cream) - Some females will bleed a few drops while others will flow heavy.
Some females will bleed during the entire cycle.

The 9th day is the common time females will become interested in breeding and may start humping other dogs.

Days 11-18 – She may breed.

Days 16-18 – Commonly the most effective Ovulation period.

If you are trying to keep your bitch from being bred, she usually cannot become pregnant while she is still bleeding.  But please remember some females will bleed during the whold heat cycle. Thinking she is out of season when the bleeding stops is the most common mistake for accidental breedings.

The most common cycle for bitches is mentioned above but can vary in dogs as it does in people.  Most bitches will flag with her tail when ready to breed. Some bitches and it is common in the chows to not breed naturally and may need artificially inseminated to become pregnant. Another helpful tool is to use tester strips available through Revival Animal for exact ovulation period or even better a microscope slide. Especially if you are taking her else where for breeding or artificially insemination.

TO BREED OR NOT BREED?

If you do not own good breeding stock and or never plan to breed her the safest and healthiest solution is to have her spay.  This will eliminate her wanting to run off, most fighting, producing unwanted puppies, stop health risks such as pyometra, she will have a healthier coat, better health and a longer life. If you are not breeding to better the breed please think about if it is in the best interest of the animals to be breeding.

BOY OR GIRL PUPPIES?

Rumor has it that if you want more girls and being that the female sperm is slower but more steady, and the eggs are higher at the beginning of the fertile period and the male sperms are faster but wear out faster, if you breed her early you should produce more girl puppies and if you breed at the end of her fertile cycle you will get more boys.  However, if you stud produces more of one sex sperm that will take presidency. Other rumor has it if you give the bitch a water/apple cider vinegar douche it will keep the male sperms from making and supposed to produce more female puppies.  I have not yet tried this douche procedure and will post any findings I learn when I try this.
